That's some research and thought involved! The Angolan radio show in the early 80's was a comedy type routine and between each sketch the MC would shout Piou....Piou and the crowd would respond. My grasp of Portuguese was insufficient to understand the jokes but the phrase became synonymous with being afraid to accept a challenge - chicken. We kayaked down the Cavango river from Rundu Falls to the Botswana border and had many a run in with hippo and crocs and the piou piou phrase indicated we needed a detour to bypass a live hazard ahead.
