Lismore protestors to be chained to cement blocks to stop coal seam gas drilling

Protesters are preparing to chain themselves to cement blocks in northern NSW on Monday to prevent Metgasco workers drilling for coal seam gas. It is one of a wave of protests against gas and coal mining across the state.

The groups are affiliated with the Lock the Gate Alliance, which is involved in protests at Whitehaven Coal's proposed Maules Creek mine and a Santos CSG drilling site in the Pilliga forest.

A spokesman for the group, Adam Guise, said most of the 200 people at a protest camp on a property near Bentley, 15 kilometres north-west of Lismore, had gathered there since mid-December.

''We have local land holders, people from throughout the region, young people, families, grandparents and a really strong indigenous representation,'' he said.

Inspector Nicole Bruce of Richmond Police said police would attend the site if required ''to ensure the protesters legally protest and the workers can carry out their lawful entitlements''.

In Maules Creek, former Sydney solicitor Marion Rose chained her neck to a water pump to protest against coalmining there.

Ms Rose, a former solicitor for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, faces being on the other side of the bar table if charged with trespassing or other offences.

Since retiring a year ago, Ms Rose has been researching the Maules Creek development and its potential environmental impacts.
