Seems the cod was overfished some time ago, and hadn't recovered in the area in the Arsuk Fjord.
Actually this is fixable, but needs a programme to have artificial cod caviar insemination, captive bred and then released.; the Japanese do this with their Salmon stock.
Some tensions with fishing activity encroaching close to the Gronnedal military base also, having they long-line cut. This all implies dinghy fisherman, as opposed to a deep-sea trawler.
During World War II, ships would head to Gronnedal to get (minor) repairs it seems - so I guess some didn't make it or were beyond repair for the facilities, note no building/dry dock etc.
