But, even if there was large quantities of lead within the rock in the pit, that has not been blasted out yet, the sea water has very limited surface area or tidal movement to cause the issues as pointed out by all the studies with regards to the tailing. So compared to the hundreds of thousands, to potentially millions of tons of crushed rock on the surface leaching away on the costal strip with lead in it I don't place as much weighting on the pit lead. But hey, even EPMs most recent release shows that they are taking the potential seriously. Finally, if the pit is drained and exploited then the science is extremely clear on what not to do with the tailings and there is a clear environmental and social obligation to not make worse the environmental issues already there.
Alas EPM say they are going to test the water in the pit. Just as it might need treatment, it might not need any treatment if the quality is the same as the ocean water on the outside... They are apparently mixing right now..
