Southwestern Energy thinks there may be 30 billion barrels of oil in the Brown Dense, of which more than 3 billion barrels may be recoverable on the 500,000 acres his company has leased.

“We should be able to figure out whether this is going to work or not this year,” Mueller said.

Other companies are drilling into the Brown Dense. By the summer, Southwestern and other companies will have 10 to 12 wells exploring the zone.

“We can sort out how this is going to work ultimately,” Mueller said.

Mueller also noted that because of past oil exploration in shallower fields, a large support infrastructure already exists for the industry – including refineries. This factor may eventually help make the Brown Dense profitable.
