An "investor" looking at a strong value proposition alone in a midcap growth stock on a high P/E relative to the sector isn't going to invest when a short seller has potential to tank the price for the medium term and destroy market sentiment for 12-18 months, which happens in midcap growth stocks on a regular basis, many examples on the ASX. Not a retail, nor an institutional.  Pretending that time isn't a factor of consideration for retail investors vs institutional again is braindead. 

And beyond that, there are a significant amount of takeovers that occur after a stock plunges in the short term. Its a risk that fundamentals or accuracy of investment thesis can't solve, because again time is a major factor in investment.
