    I don't see how they could recover money through the courts anyway.

    If you bought on market you could say "Show me the contract I signed where I agreed to pay you 2x $1 installments".

    If you bought via IPO you say "the contract is invalid as you have cancelled the first div payment".

    I am not a lawyer of course.
