The company planning to build one the world's largest prawn farms in the Top End ticked off yet another major milestone after receiving approval for a prawn hatchery on the outskirts of Darwin.
Seafarm Group's hatchery at Gunn Point will supply selectively bred, domesticated juvenile prawns to Project Sea Dragon's grow out facility at Legune Station, near the WA-NT border.
Managing director Chris Mitchell says after getting the green light for the project's last major planning approval, they will spend coming months securing financing before they can begin construction of the $ 2 billion project.
Mr Mitchell will be meeting with Traditional Owners in Kununurra today to give a project update and discuss future employment opportunities.
Once up and running at full-scale, Project Sea Dragon is expected to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of black tiger prawns for export out of Wyndham Port every year.
