We are actually a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy and at the time an early adopter nation in having created documented and codified constitution.
I'm not sure "democracy' is ever mentioned in our Constitution, but we were the first representative system of govt to kick off with both houses elected by the people (ie the eligible males )
I'm fairly sure there is nothing in the constitution to hold the people 'accountable for their decisions and actions', namely because accountability is a notoriously imprecise term. Some would argue the Govt is accountable to the parliament, but we all know that isn't the case in practice.
