Macmahon wins $90m Leinster extension

CONTRACTOR Macmahon Holdings has been awarded a three-year, $90 million extension to its underground mining contract at BHP Billiton's Leinster nickel operation.

The extended contract will see Macmahon, one of Australia's largest civil and mining contractors, supply 250 workers to the Leinster operation.

"This extension builds on our longstanding contract at the Leinster nickel operation which dates back almost 10 years to September 1997," Macmahon chief executive Nick Bowen said.

"We will now have a contract through until February 2010 and we plan to work with BHP Billiton to achieve continued improvements in performance from its Leinster nickel operation."

In November last year, Perth-based Macmahon was also awarded a $230 million contract for operations at BHPB's Jimblebar iron ore mine in the Pilbara.

Leinster is 370km north of Kalgoorlie, and produces up to 45,000 tonnes of nickel concentrate a year. It is part of BHBP's larger Nickel West project, which supplies some 16% of the world's nickel concentrate.

Macmahon's shares rose 1% to 92c in early afternoon trading.
