Good advice here . My 2 cents is based on my experience. A friend lent to mutual friend in not too dissimilar circumstances as you find yourself in. In short succession this mutual friend then had a car accident and was divorced . Short story is the mutual friend cannot pay back , even though he wants to . Banks plan and allow for black swan events in their lending evaluations ...friends don't , and sometimes pay the price. With the best of intentions and will...things can and do go horribly wrong.
