The problem is that unless both parents work in a working class family then they can't afford all the goodies that the advertisers are shoving down their throats as the prescription for happiness and fulfilment (reification....the productisation/commercialisation of a human need)
In the 50s & 60s the wife could afford to be a full time housekeeper but now that the Gig Economy /Neo-Liberalism has hit us like a prolonged Covis & with Conservative Governments that have "managed" to shoehorn workers out of secure well paid jobs under a trade union umbrella into small business people with husband & wife working 60 hours a week to make ends meet.
