Moorookamick,
There is a big difference between increasing GDP with large immigration than raising GDP per capita.
Increasing the numbers of public servants increases GDP but doesn`t raise productivity. In fact lowers it.
Increasing immigration by large amounts as Australia does lowers the incomes of Australia`s lower and middle income earners in the private sectors and they fall further behind the immune public sector.
In addition the existing infrastructure such as roads, hospitals schools suffers and quality of life decreases.
Gross Domestic product is an immensely flawed tool to measure economic well being but politicians love the headline and numbers as do bankers, real estate develops and public servants.
