The question is based on the fact that historically there is a corelationship between our GDP growth & our population growth and that our population growth has been dependant on immigration.
So if our GDP growth is dependant on our population growth and if we snuff out immigration then logically our population growth will go into reverse and with it our GDP over time. Then if our GDP drops , then in general our incomes will drop.
Are those who advocate snuffing out immigration prepared to cop a drop in income for the sake of zero or near zero immigration rate?
We can argue that that may not happen but the truth of the matters that there is no historical example outside of WW1 & 2 where our population has dropped.
GDP per capita USD or GDP per capita AUD is a different issue because if we say export those on welfare or the aged pension the GDP/capita will rise lightly ' Also over the past 2 years our GDP per capita has been influenced by a very small minority who benefitted from the spike in IO price.
In resource rich countries like Aus GDP/Capita is not as good a measure as median income (PPP) which is the one that effects the average citizen Click on the various countries' icon below th see the massive gap:
So rather than obscure the basic question haggling about GDPs and how they are formulated can I put it again as it was put to Brexiteers on the implication of Brexit:
The simple question is:
If immigration could be snuffed out, , how much of your annual income would you be willing to forego ,if any to, achieve that?
