Here is what the problem is. China's economy is as big if not bigger than the US and has a lot more left to grow.
China is currently the powerhouse of the world like it or not.

The problem is the US workers like Australians have stagnate wages growth. The US imports a lot of Chinese goods because they are a lot cheaper. Workers buy Chinese goods because they cant afford to buy US made goods.
If you start putting tariffs on Chinese goods they will become dearer, this will spark genuine inflation. If you stop importing Chinese goods in favor of US made goods this will spark inflation.
With the workers on very low wages and the real state of the economy people will not be able to afford US made products.
Most of the US car makers are making a significant part of their cars in China if not all of it. Apple makes their phones in China.
US imports Chinese steel because to use US steel would drive prices way up sparking inflation in a struggling economy where wage growth is nearly zero in real terms.

China because of the price being so low can export their products world wide. The US cannot compete at all with the Chinese exports.

Trump is about to drive a big nail in the US economy's coffin and probably the Australian economy as well.
