The brother of mining executive John Carr-Gregg killed in a west African plane crash has paid tribute to him as a man who died doing something he loved.

The entire board of Perth-based mining company Sundance Resources were among the 11 people killed when their plane crashed during a flight from Cameroon's capital Yaounde to Yangadou in Congo on Saturday.

Prominent Melbourne psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg said Sundance company secretary and lawyer John Carr-Gregg was passionate about mining, and mining law.
"The one consolation for the family ... is that he died doing something that he really loved doing and he was very passionate about," he told Fairfax Radio on Tuesday.

Dr Carr-Gregg said during one of the last times he lunched with his brother in Perth they had discussed airline safety.

"I actually offered him advice ... and that was never get in an aeroplane which doesn't begin with a number seven," he said.

"But he didn't listen - maybe that's impossible advice in a place like west Africa."

On a recent trip Mr Carr-Gregg, 58, visited a house in Kenya he grew up in, and the primary school the two brothers attended in 1966.

"He was very fond of Africa," Dr Carr-Gregg said.

"It's just a dreadful thing but at least we're no longer waiting and wondering."

The wreckage of the chartered plane was found about midnight (AEST) on Monday on the western ridge of the Avima Range in Congo, near the Gabonese border.

The Sundance board was due to visit the site of Sundance's Mbalam iron ore project near Yangadou but failed to arrive on Saturday (local time).

Mr Carr-Gregg is survived by two sons aged 19 and 20, and his wife Susan.
