my uncle fought also as a commander in png but was killed in july 1945 after a fire fight with a jap tunnel. he carried the bren gun.
my grandfather was a very highly decorated soldier in ww1. he was mentioned in dispatches 3 times and won many medals. he was recommended for the vc for holding enemy trenches at bay with grenades after being shot in the right arm. he continued to throw bombs with his left arm until he collapsed. he was responsible for the line holding. he was wounded four times during the war and died of cancer in 1955 from mustard gas.
