I've also leaned towards environmentalism all my life and been a greenie puke, but I'm now reassessing my views. While environmentalists have certainly influenced public opinion and initiated change, I believe that free markets and consumer demand are now steering the course. I agree that recycling will play a significant role in our future, but currently, the focus is on rare earth minerals and lithium - that's where the real profit lies. Gold has been overly promoted as a recession hedge for two years now, yet the market doesn't seem to be as interested. My theory is that we are currently experiencing a period of technological deflation, with the early 1900s being the only somewhat comparable period in our past where different rules applied.
