But we said the exact same thing back in 1972 when Whitlam appealed to the young voters with his policies of engagement with China and no conscription and free healthcare (which was ofcourse unaffordable at the time). Then once the youngsters had a taste of ALP government for a few years and saw that Whitlam was willing to sell WA to the Arabs all hell broke loose. Inflation hit, there were no jobs, unemployment went crazy, interest rates went mad. Sound Familiar??????
Whitlams anti rant on the steps of Parliament House was mainly attended by young radicals and public servants who feared they would have to work for a wage.
