New Caledonia where the Goro nickel mine is based is closer to Australia than is new Zealand. The Penrice Soda ash plant is, I would imagine, the closest plant in the world to New Caledonia. Why wouldn't we sell soda ash there when our transport should be less than anyone elses?

Surely too, where the company sells its soda ash should be pretty much immaterial particularly in terms of long term contracts. If you have shipping costs then you just put your tender up by enough to cover those costs. The company talks about a minimum return on net assets of more than 15 percent and each tender would surely be prepared with that in mind. You just wouldn't sell soda ash to Goro in New Caledonia if ACI around the corner was prepared to pay you more except perhaps to gain a wider spread of customers.
