In area, the majority of land in Oz is owned by the government and leased to tenant farmers/station owners. And even if you have a clear, unencumbered house in the burbs, you only own the top few meters of dirt it rests on - just in case a valuable mineral is discovered, so the government can claim it as there's for the royalties.
