OM publish stuff outside their regular proxy advise stuff to point out certain governance issues. They do that more to get clients to avoid certain companies than actually short. (eg. They flagged BLA before Glaucus wrote up on them and savaged them). Fine print is quite standard.
Sure there is a lot of conjecture and guesses because nobody operates on complete information. Labelling a best guess as "true/false" just because the company said so is not a good data point. Both innocent co's and frauds will deny everything.
As an investor you can have access to company announcements and accounts just like everyone else. But everyone has different interpretations and forecasts of the metrics. This is where a good Broker/Analyst/Research house will provide their value add. If a firm makes a lot of bad calls eventually nobody cares what they have to say and they go out of business.
Its just another source of information out there to be used.
