New A-League club owner Clive Palmer has appointed his mining company chief executive to the same position at the fledgling Gold Coast United.

Iron ore baron Palmer, the Coast's owner and chairman, announced Clive Mensink as the inaugural CEO of the club which will play in the expanded A-League in 2009-10.

A former Brisbane club official, Mensink has been involved with Palmer's company Mineralogy for more than 15 years.

Palmer said he was confident Mensink would provide the business and soccer knowledge required to steer the club through its formative years.

"We've appointed Clive Mensink because we know he has an excellent track record as a CEO, a position he holds at Mineralogy," said Australia's fourth richest man, who is reportedly worth more than $1.5 billion.

"More importantly, he's the deputy chairman of Australasian Resources, which is a publicly listed company, so he's used to the high demands and requirements of corporate life."

Mensink, 40, was the treasurer at Brisbane club North Star in 2003.

The Coast franchise is yet to decide on its official name but is gradually building its front-office staff, including five former Queensland Roar employees.

Inaugural Roar coach Miron Bleiberg will coach United when the expanded A-League kicks off in 14 months
