    pete222,

IMO if Alaska wanted to reduce it 'ice' adding CO2 or GHGs to the atmosphere would have an opposite effect. It is well known that 'fresh' water being 'dumped' into the ocean as affects on the thermohaline cycle.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutdown_of_thermohaline_circulation

So by adding GHGs and 'warming' (adding capacity to absorb/transfer sun energy), then hence cause melting of fresh water, potentially the slowing or worst-case shutdown of the thermohaline cycle would result in more 'cooling' or 'less heat transfer' to the Alaskan region.

IMO, perhaps adding copious amounts of NaCl or KCl at melt water to ocean entry points may be what is in order to manipulate the environment to suit.

I do think however the luddites would have reservations for such actions, and for good reason too IMO.
