What do you think the Gov tried to get Telstra to do under the tender process? Just that. The only provisos were that they had to cover 99% of the population, (if they needed a subsidy that was to be part of the tender) and there had to be fair access to the network for other parties. No democratic country in the world allows one dominant group total monopolistic power in critical infrastructure. The Yanks certainly don't. They broke up Bell, their "big" telco, and Standard Oil.

Your beloved Howard did not give the privatised Telstra that power either. It was written in the enabling legislation that other telcos must be given access to the network at a fair price.

There is no chance of a referendum and the Libs would be slaughtered in a DD.
