There are other reasons for a Fibre network to 80% of businesses and residences in Australia.

- Larger aggregrate of bandwidth

- Enable businesses of all types to load there IT services over a larger geo without the million dollar costs

- Enable governments and local governments to improve there response and services with more distributed or centralized IT infrastructure

The only players that use fibre currently are mainly based in CBD and have offices in other CBD's around Australia. These fibre to door services cost $000's.

In twenty years fibre to door will be an neccesity more than an option. Also with improved technology fibre will outpace copper and wireless by x100's in relative bandwidth terms.

Rudd's proposal is born out of future nessecity more than home users and school's having better than standard broadband. I might also go as far as saying that the competition of business may fallback on its performance of IT infrastructure.
