Migrant women call for education and awareness of forced marriage in Australia

When Victorian sisters Hamida and Fatemah Samar heard about the forced marriage and subsequent murder of 21-year-old Ruqia Haidari, it brought back traumatising memories.

The Samar sisters, based in Mansfield, grew up seeing women, including three of their sisters, get married without having much say in the matter.

But that was in Afghanistan, the country they fled after the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Seeing a case of forced marriage in Australia was "terrifying" for them.

"Words cannot explain it," Fatemah said.

I thought we encouraged migrants to bring their rich culture, religion and other social mores with them when coming to Australia. Didn't Bob Hawke, demigod, tell us that multiculturalism would enrich the Australian lifestyle. Is calling out forced marriages somehow 'racist'. Who will fund the education program, We (Australian taxpayers) already pay to teach them English so why not lump education into that program.

Hey Fatemah, don't you think forced marriage is a quality practice.
