We're often assured by our learned Rightist friends that consumption taxes are beautiful and efficient.
Well, one way to keep the tax take progressive and efficient is simply to tax the merry hell out of luxury goods and services. Let's face it - the rich will still pay for these things and doubling the tax on a Porsche 9/11 isn't going to make a jot of difference to the upper crust.
What's the harm?
