It still "might" kill off the project - they should have got an independent company to perform a DFS.
You can leach Nickel from laterite ore in Australia but it is not cost effective to do so, due to the high ratio of deleterious elements such as magnesium, calcium, etc From a metallurgical point, it can be extracted but it is not cost effective.
What you call "bottleneck" is caused by too much magnesium having to be filtered out as solid - as per their progress updates.
