If you recall when rodent introduced the GST we were never going to have, it included basic food items. The Democrats, (Remember them?) led by amateur Meg Less, gave conditional support for the GST provided basic food was exempt. This chopped back the GST revenues for the States and the tradeoff was that they were allowed to keep the State based taxes.

The upshot is that the States are not under an obligation to cut their taxes. Rodent and company are once again doing what they do best, being economical with the truth.
