You can be held to account for not doing so . Ive been pulled up before while traveling and also been warned to be aware of it by hotel staff.

But i really had no qualms with people being asked to produce a visa if they could not provide evidence of being a citizen.

We are asked to produce evidence to identity almost daily of some sort .

The visa system is a bit of a mess imo.
