JonnoH, this is just one of the disasters inflicted on Australians by Tony Abbott's government.

The decision to provide a second-rate network will obviate the plans of many startup companies dependent on being able to match the highest internet speeds available. Our fledgling ICT economy will cop a big kick in the gut while the prospects for regional areas have been decimated.

Many people now have Gigabet network modem/switches and are progressively discovering that the likes of the new wifi NBN being rolled out into regional areas is faster than dial-up, but is also a bit like the ten year old router they just replaced - pedestrian! People are already talking about how their latest NBN wifi / FTTN connections crawl at certain times of the day.

The really bad news is that FTTN will have to be ripped out and replaced at extraordinary cost to taxpayers within a decade. Otherwise Australia will have internet services slower than those in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, ..... our competitors who must be in fits of laughter at Abbott's attempt to return us to the golden age of coal.
