I don't know what our requirements will be in 50 years, but I do know on today's technology we can transmit 255 Terabits per second down a single strand of fibre, and for whatever technology we have now, it will advance over the next 5 decades.
Transmission mediums are still fixed line or wireless.
Line if sight technologies only work if there is line of sight.
P.S. Using ship semaphore signaling is not the most efficient way to transmit binary code.
