Mills faced mounting speculation about his leadership after Monday's heated cabinet meeting where one minister threw documents at him while others considered calling the police.
A meeting of senior politicians in the Territory to replace Mills' deputy and Treasurer Robyn Lambley who was dumped after the explosive meeting today turned into a marathon session to elect a new leader and chief minister, The Northern Territory News reported.
Mr Mills reportedly faced a challenge to his leadership - the second in just weeks - from either Adam Giles or Dave Tollner.
