our dams are mostly where there is high rainfall. i live central coast NSW. we have around 45 inches.our mangrove mt dam was built in the wrong place . usually all our local dams are full.
i lived in the Riverina area for a couple of years. i saw what a great asset and wealth irrigation was to the people of the MIA. they transport water via open channels. i always thought by using pipes would be more efficient.
the farms on the coast are only hobbies compared to the farms over the ranges. and this is where the water is needed.
why couldn`t we build a real big reservoir at a low point in the middle of Australia and pump water from every where. that way when it is flooding on the coast we can catch the water and transfer it to where it is needed.
have a look what Libya done with their GMRP. the Libyans transport the water through massive pipes 4000 kms. they now farm the deserts.
