So long as you are happy that some weeks you don't get to drive anywhere in your electric car the distributed solar model with battery storage is a good one but it still has a cost and doesnt cover certain situations. A large lithium Ion battery in your house that can store enough energy for one car charge costs circa $20K and needs to be replaced every 3 years. Need to factor that cost vs hydrocarbon alternatives.

If everyone in your city needs to charge their car from the grid next week after a couple of weeks of particularly rainy and very overcast weather, the grid and power plants will need to exist to support that system when solar doesnt cut it and sit idle 95% of the time on care and maintenance with standby personnel ready to operate.

Renewables are not guaranteed so storage technology is key as you rightly identify but storage has a cost as outlined above with battery replacement. Then you have a solution for 95%+ of the time. to provide a solution to meet peak demands when the baseload is not guaranteed output is the most costly infrastructure there is unless like south australia you are willing to tolerate an unreliable power supply with some % of blackouts.
