    Yes, the origin of Jews not eating pork is that it was very common to get trichinosis from consuming them, frequently fatal. Hence the religious edict not to eat pork, not that they understood the fundamental causation of illness/death. But now that we do and pig farming is strictly regulated to prevent this very problem, the practice is so much a part of their religious belief that it will never be revoked.
