This would be my guess as well. I assume they are ground truthing the lab results, so they know if the deposit is legit (wouldn't be the first imaginary deposit) and how much of a threat to them it is. If it all stacks up then I would expect significant buy action / takeover by a related party, or pressure on the Malawi government to stifle or take the project back.
So, threat and opportunity, take your pick.
