After the demise of Ansett, I believe the Qantas move to counter Virgin with a newly created airline - Jetstar - was the smartest move ever.
Qantas immediately took out the cheaper seats alternative that Virgin offered and put Virgin under real cost pressure.
The synergies of having one airline - 2 brands - pilots, staff, bookings, etc, left Virgin in a real world of pain.
Creating Tiger Air as a counter did not work as intended.
