It all depends on what you want to do.
Most users should be happy with a PC.
If you find that you like to fiddle around and you keep breaking stuff, get a mac.
If you find you enjoy fiddling around with stuff and working out your own solutions to problems, then install some flavour of linux.
Likewise if you are building a PC for someone else and they have no idea what they are doing and only want to use the basics, set them up with ubuntu and lock it down tight.

It can do all the same web based stuff and word processing and media playing etc and you don't have to worry too much about them getting it massively infected with rubbish software/spyware and virii. I would not be able to count the number of times i've had to go to friends and families houses to fix their stinking windows and mac machines. (For the record I run 4 windows 7 machines, one vista, one XP and one red hat)
