The exponentially increasing global demand for batteries will lead to a corresponding increase in the demand for raw materials, especially for cobalt, lithium, nickel and manganese, which has a significant impact on the environment. The increasing use of batteries will also lead to an increase in the amount of waste. The number of recyclable lithium batteries is expected to increase 700-fold between 2020 and 2040.
At the same time, the industry is now better positioned to achieve higher recycling efficiencies and recovery rates, which also means that it is better able to contribute to the circular economy of the sector.
Given the strategic importance of batteries and in order to reduce their negative effects on the environment, harmonized rules across the Union should be established to ensure that the expected market growth occurs in the most sustainable way possible. The new regulation creates a comprehensive framework that covers all battery types and encompasses the entire life cycle of the batteries from the manufacturing process to the design requirements to the second service life, recycling and the use of recycled materials.
