While iron ore remains Australia's most lucrative export commodity, the nation has been gripped by a lithium boom in recent years, and the rapid development of mines is starting to show up in export data. The 425,896 tonnes of spodumene, a lithium-rich rock, exported through Port Hedland in December was the highest since Mineral Resources started exporting the commodity in raw form in April, and 40 per cent higher than the volumes shipped in November.
