Lithium Hydroxide (a refining of Lithium Carbonate) is necessary for high-energy-density battery types with cobalt cathodes, such as nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide (NCA) and nickel-managnese-cobalt oxide (NMC) used in consumer electronics and long-mileage electric vehicles, where it is of essence to have the best possible battery life for smartphones and the longest driving vehicle on one charge. Companies that use cobalt-cathode batteries (and thus lithium hydroxide) are Tesla, Apple, Samsung etc.
