I think the next big step won't be in chemistry that results in range extension, it will be in anode-cathode chemistry that results in faster charging.
I have little doubt we aren't too far away from seeing a battery that can recharge in minutes - and by that I mean less than 10, and possibly less than 1. Once that occurs for portable devices, it won't be long at all before that is developed for cars.
