I personally think its wasted tax payers dollars similar to the lost dollars that went into carbon sequestration with nothing to show for it. They do have some cell chemistry research but currently a lot of talk about hydrogen to my dismay.

Even ignoring the complete lack of infrastructure, the key reason why hydrogen is a dead end is entirely due to energy inefficiency. The amount of renewable energy from the power point ultimately going into turning the wheels (kinetic energy) for a HFV is only about 20-25% (creation of hydrogen, compression, storage etc lots of waste). For a BEV, its around 70-80%. There is absolutely no way HFV tech can ever compete. Simply put, the fuel cost per km will always be significantly higher, just look up hydrogen refueling prices (cost significantly more than gasoline). The cars themselves are complicated and more expensive too.
