You say it’s counterintuitive that an EV gets 30% better range on the city cycle than highway cycle, but I think of it the other way around. The fact than an ICE gets better range on the highway cycle, despite the far higher aerodynamic drag, is an indication of just how inefficient ICEs are. In cities ICEs just throw away kinetic energy as heat when braking, whereas EV recover a lot of it, and when ICEs accelerate they are far less efficient (rich vs lean mixture to avoid knocking etc) than when operating at a constant speed, EVs not so much.
