I watched Tony Seba Clean Disruption video many times over the last 4-5 months and have added a few points to what he mentioned.
Tony states “disruption is usually missed by the experts and insiders”.
So who invented the digital camera? Ironically, Kodak did !!! or rather, a company engineer called Steve Sasson, who put together a toaster-sized contraption that could save images using electronic circuits. The images were transferred onto a tape cassette and were viewable by attaching the camera to a TV screen, a process that took 23 seconds. It was an astonishing achievement. And it happened in 1975, long before the digital age. Mr Sasson and his colleagues were met with blank faces when they unveiled their device to Kodak's bosses. Even he didn't fully see its potential. In the 1990s, Kodak poured billions into developing technology for taking pictures using mobile phones and other digital devices. But it held back from developing digital cameras for the mass market for fear of killing its all-important film business. Others, such as the Japanese firm Canon, rushed in.
1976 More than 90 per cent of photographic film and more than 85 per cent of cameras sold in the US are made by Kodak.
1994 One of the first consumer digital cameras, the QuickTake, is launched by Apple. It is made by Kodak.
2004 As the popularity of digital cameras grows, Kodak finally abandons the film camera.
2005 Kodak is the largest digital camera retailer in the US, raking in up to $5.7bn in sales.
2007 Kodak falls to fourth biggest digital camera retailer. By 2010, it is the seventh biggest.
2009 After 74 years of production, Kodak stops selling 35mm colour film.
2012 Kodak files for chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Tony Seba pointed out in his “Clean Disruption” video from the year 1900 to 1912 New York City went from all horses to all cars in 13 years.
AT&T totally missed out on the mobile phone market disruption as they were focused on landlines.
In the year 2000 the world biggest super computer was in Sandia National Labs and took up 150m². This 1 Teraflop computer cost $46 million and 850kw electricity.
15 years later NVIDIA produced a 2.3 Teraflop 15w version to slot into a computer for $59.00
In 2016 they brought out a 8 teraflop computer.
An interesting fact: In 1969 man went to the moon with a 1Mb computer to control the space craft.
Recently we have witnessed when TV’s went from Cathode Ray Tube televisions to Flat Screen LCD’s in a very short space of time, even less than 13 years. You can’t even buy a CRT tv now. This is the same type of transition from horses to cars.
I believe we are about to see the disruption of ICE cars, trucks, buses etc.. and when you see what is happening in China you can well believe the age of the Internal Combustion Engine is coming to an end. Global warming and pollution cannot continue to advance at such a high rate or we will have no planet left to live on. Green technology is the future.
