If you pay down your SMSF debt by selling shares you then have to pay tax on that gain as well and it becomes a cycle.
The type of person who has a lot of money in SMSF wants to avoid selling down their holdings.
They are wired to build wealth.
Even with the current tax regime in SMSF, without the taxing of unrealised gains, I observe that such individuals stay in the workforce to draw a salary which they use as non-concessional contributions to pay off SMSF tax, and avoid selling down their SMSF share holdings.
Reduced turnover in the workforce and later retirement may be an unintended outcome of the taxing of unrealised gains policy.
Not a large percentage of the workforce but will have an impact on the younger generation, reducing employment creation - the younger generation are already under the pump.
