That argument is so flawed. Selling short is no different to an investor selling shares they own. The lender lends the shares to the shorter, and they sell on behalf of the original owner. The lender (original owner) cannot sell themselves until those shares are bought back again, so there is no artificial supply or any of the BS suggested by opponents of shorting
