    Re-post including Lura’s correction:

It’s interesting that Australia, and other countries like Brazil, through iron ore export and a lack of value adding, gifts China a lot of elements including rare earths - for example the transition metal vanadium (and also rare earths):

“Vanadium bearing slags, the solid byproducts in iron- and steel-making plants, are the principal source of vanadium production, accounting for more than 69% of total vanadium in terms ofthe raw material types”. [Journal of MaterialsResearch and Technology]

”steelmaking slag contains..9 rare earth elements” [Internstional Journal of Energy for a Clean Environment]

Are the rare earths and metals China benefits from priced into our iron ore exports at all, including in a geo-political sense?

Why can’t we value add more often ourselves, even if we do so offshore - as Lynas does?

Funny that the iron ore majors are under no apparent pressure to value add given that we appear to be gifting rare earths to China. Why isn’t this a talking point for Government?
